Arslan Ash: The Passion That Made History

In the world of fighting games there are champions, legends, and players destined to be remembered forever. Then there is Arslan Ash.

For years, Pakistan’s Tekken scene remained almost invisible to the rest of the world. While the United States, South Korea, and Japan dominated tournaments and media coverage, hundreds of players trained far from the spotlight, facing each other every day at an astonishing technical level but without the resources needed to compete at international events.

The journey that changed everything

In 2019, everything changed.

Arslan Ash’s dream of testing himself against the best players in the world was finally about to become a reality, but talent alone was not enough to get him to Japan. He needed money, documents, and the hope that the sacrifice would truly be worth it; his family decided to support him, funding his trip to EVO Japan 2019.

No one could have imagined that this decision would change Tekken history forever: what began as one player’s journey would become something much bigger, the rise of a competitive legend and the emergence of an entire national scene.

After a journey lasting more than two days, five flights, visa problems, and barely any sleep, Arslan Ash arrived at EVO Japan 2019 just before the tournament began. Hungry, exhausted, and still unknown to the wider public, he sat down at the station and began writing one of the most remarkable chapters in fighting game history, as no one considered him a favourite.

Yet he eliminated, one after another, some of the biggest names in competitive Tekken. Among them were Knee, regarded by many as the greatest player of all time; LowHigh, EVO 2018 champion; Chanel, a veteran of the Korean scene; and Book, the Thai talent who would go on to become one of the circuit’s leading players. Finally, he defeated AK in the grand final, claiming the Tekken 7 title and leaving the audience speechless.

From breakthrough to dominance

A few months later came EVO Las Vegas

On that stage, surrounded by the game’s most established champions and with every spotlight fixed on him, Arslan proved that his victory in Japan had not been a fluke. He also won EVO Las Vegas 2019, becoming the first Pakistani player to claim the most prestigious tournament in competitive fighting games and to win two EVO titles in the same year.

From that moment on, the world began to look at Pakistan in a completely different way.

In the years that followed, Arslan Ash continued to achieve results that only a handful of players could match. The fairy tale soon became a rock solid reality: he kept winning until he reached eight EVO titles, becoming the most successful player in Tekken history by number of victories at the event.

It is a record that reflects a level of consistency and longevity rarely seen in competitive play. Those achievements were joined by victory at the Tekken World Tour 2023 and numerous other international successes, firmly establishing his place among the greatest fighting game players of all time. But judging him only by tournament results would be reductive.

A playstyle that became a benchmark

His playstyle has become a benchmark for an entire generation: surgical precision, near-perfect defence, flawless movement, and a command of space that leaves opponents very little room to breathe. Arslan typically does not chase spectacle for its own sake, but builds every victory through discipline, patience, and an exceptional ability to read the game.

His success, however, has had an impact even greater than the victories he earned on stage.

More than a champion

Today, Arslan Ash represents more than himself. He has become the face of an entire competitive nation and the symbol of Pakistan in the fighting game world.

His achievements brought international attention to a scene that had remained far from the biggest stages for years. Through his results, the world discovered the strength of Pakistan’s Tekken community, forcing organisations, sponsors, and professional players to take notice of a reality that had previously been almost entirely overlooked.

But Arslan Ash’s contribution has gone far beyond winning tournaments: while his success did change how Pakistan was perceived around the world, most importantly he chose to turn it into an opportunity for others as well.

Using part of his earnings, he helped create a training centre in Lahore, giving players a place where they could practise for free, supporting young talent, and organising in-person boot camps to raise the country’s competitive level even further. In other words, his success became legacy, a legacy that changed Tekken.

Today, whenever the greatest players in EVO history are discussed, Arslan Ash’s name inevitably appears alongside the legends who helped define the genre.

Some victories earn a place in the record books. Arslan Ash added an entire incredible new chapter.
